How To Clean Your Closet (Spring Cleaning)

If you’re interested in learning how to clean your closet, we’ve got the best tips! Go through your wardrobe and get organized this spring.

The weather is getting warmer and the birds have started chirping – it’s officially spring! That means it’s time to start organizing your closet to make room for all of your spring and summer clothing. Out with the old and in with the new! As you start to pack away your scarves, hats, and sweaters, now’s as good a time as any to really go through your things.

Extend your spring cleaning efforts to your closet, and you’ll feel a lot better about the state of your wardrobe. It’s the best time to take a hard look at your belongings so that you can determine what stays and what should go. When you keep only the things you really need, you’ll have more room to add in any new clothing that you’d like to purchase.

All of this to say, you don’t need to wait until springtime to start cleaning out your closet. You can use these tips any time of year!

How to Clean Your Closet

The best way to clean your closet is to start by taking everything off of the shelves and racks so that you can get a good look at what you have. You can make the process easier by separating things into different categories: tops, bottoms, coats and jackets, and accessories.

Then, consider what you actually wear. Put those items aside to keep. Any items that hold sentimental value, but that you may not wear all the time can be set aside to keep too. It’s important to be honest here and only keep things that you know you’ll use one day.

If you find clothes that you no longer wear because they need mending, make a second pile for those. If you have any items that you think you could sell, make another pile. You can also make a pile of clothing that you want to donate. Any items that are stained, ripped, or just unwearable should be discarded.

You should now have quite a few piles: keep, mend, sell, donate, and discard. Any seasonal clothing in the keep pile that you know you won’t wear in the warmer months (think heavy coats, scarves, and the like) should be put into storage bins or bags. You don’t want to waste any valuable closet space with things that you won’t need to touch until next winter.

All of the other clothing that you’d like to keep should be placed on hangers where you can see them. Opt for velvet or wooden hangers when you can. Those wire hangers can seriously damage your clothing – and no one wants that. Make sure to use pant hangers where appropriate! When you use proper storage methods for your clothing, you’ll get even more use out of them.

Contact your local donation center so that they can pick up any of the things you want to give away. Toss the clothes that you want to discard. If you aren’t very handy with a needle and thread, contact a tailor near you so that you can set up an appointment to drop off whatever needs mending

Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Closet

Now that you have a blank slate, you can start to rearrange your wardrobe! Place things that you wear often where you can easily access them. Decide whether you want to hang everything, or if there are some items that you can fold. Some sweaters and t-shirts are best stored folded on a shelf.

Again, make sure to use the correct hangers for different items. You can get super organized and arrange your things by color, or you can separate different types of clothing and then hang them together. Use whatever method makes the most sense for you!
