How To Store Scarves

You’ll get the most out of your scarves – and your closet – if you know how to properly store them!

You may wear scarves to keep warm, or perhaps you have an impressive collection of silk styles. Whichever type you like, scarves are some of the most difficult clothing items to keep organized. Should you hang them on a hook? On a hanger? Or, should you fold them up and store them on a shelf?

All of the above methods have their merits. It really comes down to personal preference and closet space! Scarves can easily become overwhelming if you don’t put a system in place to keep them in order. There’s nothing worse than opening up your wardrobe only to be greeted by a pile of falling neckwear.

To help you avoid getting swallowed whole by your scarf collection, let’s take a closer look at some different ways to store scarves!

Scarf Organizer Ideas

These solutions are sure to make your closet look and feel more organized.

Hangers

One of our favorite ways to organize scarves is (you guessed it) to use a high-quality wooden or velvet hanger. You can choose to drape one scarf per hanger, or you can place several on one. If you have a collection of delicate silk scarves, this is a great method.

If you opt for a velvet hanger, your scarves will stay put thanks to the no-slip fabric. When using wooden hangers, you may need to tie a knot to hold it in place. Something to keep in mind if you have a special scarf that you don’t want to wrinkle!

Scarf Rack

Invest in a specially made scarf rack to organize and display your scarves. It’s a great way to actually see your full collection! This is another preferred method for silk scarves that can be worn all year round.

Scarf racks feature small loops that you pull your scarf through so that it hangs straight down. You’ll feel super organized with a scarf rack!

Hooks

This option is best if you only have a few scarves that need organizing. You can place the hooks on the inside of your closet or next to your front door. Or, you could do both, and keep the scarves that you use the most in your entryway for convenience.

Tricks For How to Organize Scarves

Use these simple hacks for more unique ways to organize your scarf collection.

Shoe Cubby

Repurpose a shoe cubby you don’t use for your scarves! This is a great technique if you own several big and bulky scarves. Those cold-weather accessories can take up too much room if you use the hanger or hook methods above.

Fold or roll up your scarves before you place them inside each cubby. You can even store multiple scarves in one cubby hole if they’re thin enough.

Closet Rod

This scarf organization method works best if you have ample closet space to spare! Simply wrap the scarf around the rod and tie a loose knot so that it doesn’t fall down. Be sure not to tie the knot too tightly or you could end up with wrinkles.

How to Store Scarves When You Aren’t Using Them

There are some scarves that you can wear all year round and others that you’ll need to put away during the warmer months. Here are a few ways to store your cold-weather accessories during the summer.

Shelves

An easy organization solution that shouldn’t be overlooked! Fold up your scarves nicely before placing them on a shelf. Just make sure that you don’t pile too many on top of each other. If you stack them too high, you won’t be able to reach them without pulling down the entire pile!

Stay extra organized and insert plastic dividers in between each pile – especially if you’re working with a long shelf.

Baskets

You can store your scarves in a basket that you either keep on display in your bedroom, entryway, or under your bed. You can also place the basket on the top shelf of your closet to keep them away from dust or dirt. Again, you can fold your scarves or roll them before placing them in the basket.

No matter which way you do it, you’ll feel better when your scarves are stored and organized properly!
